In the past, most instrument dusters screens of an automobile were generally formed of limited components, like few alert signs and speedometer gauge. However, an era of smart cars with a remarkable development of technology has brought a number of advanced functions into the vehicle software system. Concurrently, with an increase in the LCD panel installation on instrument cluster following the growth of the display industry, this has allowed users to access information with a digitalized high definition screen. Due to the fact that most digitalized instrument clusters’ interface adopted some information and services from infotainment system, dynamic interaction occurs between drivers and the interface. This may cause a matter of drivers’ distraction which is closely related to the safety. This study has focused on the characteristics of digitalized instrument cluster interface as a new HMI and the information displayed on them through current automobile market research. Then, re-classification of information has been carried on to sort out appropriate information to meet the drivers’ needs and safety. Finally, concerning the drivers’ distraction, the study proposes the information structure of service elements and providing methods on digital instrument cluster interface based on the drivers’ familiarity about the route. As a result, the study will give directions to future research in designing the digital instrument cluster interface of smart cars.
