Despite being 70 years after independence, a subject, ‘Are we really independent?’ is still one of the leading social discourses in Korean society. This question per se assumes that Korea and Koreans are not independent yet. In order to gain an answer to this contemporary question, this paper attempts to shed light on Korean national identity in a way which analyzes the relations between national history and the role of national leaders.
Pre-modern Koreans had not yet formulated a unified national identity owing to a clear class consciousness and Sino-centralism that the then ruling class had possessed. Confronting threats from the Western powers and the following loss of sovereignty, Korean national leaders keenly felt the necessity of rejuvenating national history so as to form national identity though which all national members can share. They believed that it is the most urgent task for restoring the sovereign rights and establishing the future nation-state.
Korean nation was, however, divided by the different political ideologies in the wake of the independence, and it has resulted in being permanent after the Korean War. During the era of President Park Chung-Hee, Koreans had an opportunity to embrace the perspective of national history on which the former national leaders - i.e. Shin Chaeho and Park Eunsik - embarked at the dawn of nationalism in Korea. Nonetheless, it was nothing but a means of stabilizing Park’s regime stability by excluding, and othering, another half of nation living in the North Korea. On the other hand, the Korean left-leaning group also played a critical role in leading democratization since 1980s, in particular. Nonetheless, they have tried to shrink space and time of Korean national history in the name of science. In general, Koreans are now facing the trend of ‘Post-nationalsm’ even before they have not yet establish national identity on the basis of their history. For Koreans wishing to a unified Korea, however, national history is still in effect as the way to unify the divided nations.
