As the tendency of stressing the aesthetics of human bodies, and the sociocultural effects derived from the development of textile industry have led to underwear, the materials and decorations have varied and various kinds of underwear that emphasis and exaggeration of human bodies have been developed. Since the extent of exposure of underwear is decided depending on the style of outer garments and the silhouette of outer garments is decided depending on the underwear, in order to maintain exaggerated shapes, the correlation between outer garments and underwear has become greater than ever. Functions of underclothes of Renaissance are as follow: to support the shape of the costume, to keep cleanliness, to do erotic use of underclothes and to express as a method of class distinction. But the function of underwear that was importantly recognized differed depending on sex. While men`s underwear served to represent their status more remarkably than women`s, women`s underwear stressed the function of maintaining the shape of clothes more remarkably than men`s. Generally in costume history, women weared garments to express their sexual attractiveness more than men. However, men expressed their sexual attractiveness using underwear more positively than women. The magnificence and inconvenience of clothes represented the level of upper classes, and one kind of underwear worn represented multi-functions of underwear. In addition, that the prohibition order on luxury underwear regulated social status shows that the underwear in the Renaissance era were greatly developed.
