This study aimed to analyze fashion designs of leopard pattern so as to provide tips for fashion design using animal patterns. As for the research method, this study investigated design trends in recent fashion after an historical review of leopard pattern in costume history. Focusing on the works in the pret a porter collections from 2000 S/S to 2008 S/S, selected 139 pictures of leopard pattern designs were analyzed. From the research on the nature of leopard pattern, wildness and camouflage were extracted. The characteristics from the historical review of leopard pattern could be summarized as mythology, sexuality and exoticism. As the results of collections analysis, the types of animal pattern were classified into a real type, draft type, abstract and reorganized type, and combination type. Leopard pattern found in contemporary fashion could be summarized as mystic glamour, wild chic, girlish casual, and African ethnic style. In conclusion, leopard pattern in contemporary fashion was expressed as not only wild and sexy style but various fashion styles through mix-match coordination and remix of color and patterns. Like this reason, leopard pattern would be in vogue afterward and rebirth as new style supported by fashionistas.
