Transfer printing is a craft design method which can move the same images of colored fabrics, leaves, and rocks on the surface of other materials such as clay, glass, metal, wood, and fabric. By this method the very thin lines, precise shapes, and overlaped colors design can appear on the surface. This method also quickly reproduce multiple pieces at the same time with artistic expression. It can be developed as a solution to pollution-free industrial design processing for our safe environment. Transfer printing would be one of the most useful design technical methods for both practical and decorative craft design pieces. But transfer printing is underdeveloped in terms of applying techniques and theoretical information in the area of craft design in Korea. This article conducts a survey and makes comparisons of new types of applying technics of transfer printing methods of American artists in the 1990s. The survey will show how some American artists manage and apply some unusual materials to their own transfer printing works. It also demonstrates how other American artists make three-dimensional works by using transfer printing method. This article concludes by considering the possibility of the development and popularization of many diverse interests of transfer printing method as a new artistic direction in the 21c.
