지구가 생태학적으로 오염되고 있는 오늘날 다양한 환경 속에서 모든 생명체와 관계 있는 생태환경을 이해하는 것은 지구의 생존에 있어 중요하다. 인간과 환경을 연계하는 고유 영역은 바로 디자인으로 결론지어진다.생태환경을 고려한 에콜로지 디자인(Ecological Design)의 궁극적 목적은 환경윤리에 입각하여 환경친화적 제품을 디자인하고 사용함으로써 인간과 자연의 공존을 도모하고 도시와 산업사회의 재균형을 이루는 데 있다.생태환경을 고려한 에콜로지 디자인(Ecological Design)의 방안은 다음과 같다.첫째, 재료를 절감(Reducing)하고 재사용(Reuse), 재활용(Recycling), 재충전(Refill), 재생(Regeneration)의 원리에 입각해서 제품의 설계, 생산과정, 포장 운송, 폐기시에 생태환경의 피해를 줄이는 디자인이다. 이러한 환경 친화적 제품을 디자인하고 사용함으로써 인간과 자연사이의 실체적, 정신적 틈을 메우고 도시와 산업사회를 재생시키는데 있다. 둘째, 그에 수반되는 산업사회의 기본인 인간 도심생활 및 주거환경 신축시 부지를 분석하여 대지를 효율적으로 이용하고 스카이라인 등 주위 경관과의 조화를 이루는 디자인이다.셋째, 폐하가 된 공장지대나 폐탄광 같은 산업기반시설의 생태환경을 재창조하고 도심생활에 있어 가장 문제가 되고 있는 쓰레기 매립장과 손상된 서식지나 메마른 도시지역을 도심 한가운데 조화시켜 생명을 창조하는 장소로 활용하는 등 자연과 도시의 생태계가 직면한 문제들에 대한 해결책을 제시하는 디자인이다.도시 생태학에서 가장 절박하게 관련되어있는 것 중의 하나인 쓰레기 문제의 디자인적 접근방법 등 초기 환경예술에서 확대된 이러한 생태환경디자인은 자연과 디자인을 통합하기 위한 더욱 더 사회 지향적인 접근법을 대표한다.에콜로지 디자이너는 전통적인 디자인 범주를 초월하여 생태학, 생명과학, 생태학, 인류학 등의 생체다양성이라는 주제에 대한 이해를 하고, 작가와 음악가, 행위 예술가나 드라마 연출가들과 함께 지구의 미래에 대해 대중적인 의식을 일깨우는데 앞장서야 한다. 에콜로지 디자이너는 자연의 측면을 고립시키고 해명하는 것이 아니라 오히려 관계성의 총체적 네트워크로 통합시켜야만 하는 것이다.

In this period of ecological pollution, it is important the sake of earth`s survival to understand the ecological environment which closely interacts with all living things in many diverse surroundings. It is eventually the inherent role of design to connect mankind with this environment. The ultimate role of ecological design, which takes ecological environment into consideration, is in promoting the mutual survival of mankind and nature as well as to reestablishing ecological balance in cities and industrial societies by designing and utilizing environmentally friendly goods according to environmental ethics. The following describes ecological design taking ecological environment into consideration. First, ecological design stands for designing under the principles of reducing, reusing, recycling, regenerating and refilling by which destruction of ecological environment resulting from the design, production, packing, delivery and destruction of goods can be minimized. It is by designing and using such environmentally friendly products that the physical and spiritual gat that exists between mankind and nature can be reduced and cities and industrial societies can be revitalized. Second, it is design whereby, through the analysis of mankind`s city life and the land to be used for new living areas, the more effective means of land usage as well as the inducement of harmony with surrounding scenery and skyline is pursued. Third, it is design which gives solutions to the problems that the ecological worlds of nature and cities are faced with. For example, the ecological environment of industrial facilities which have been abandoned and in ruin can be recreated while such major problem locations of today such as waste dumps, damaged habitats and dying city locals can be revitalized so that these places now become origins of new life. Expanded from early environment design which sought to solve the problems associated with waste, the most problematic issue in terms of urban ecology, ecological environment design today strives to follow a more socially oriented approach in uniting nature and design. Ecology designers must go over the boundaries of traditional design and understand such subjects as ecology, life science, behavioral science, and anthropology which suggest the diversity of ecology and furthermore must be at the forefront along with performance artists and drama producers in awakening the minds of the general public concerning earth`s future. The role of ecology designers is not in trying to depict nature as something separate from other aspects of this world but rather to unite them all in one general and grand network.
