Europe’s modern history provides rich cases of alliance-making and breaking among the states and the alliance theory of realism has significantly developed through analyzing this period of Europe. Realism’s dominant status in IR owes a lot to the contribution of its alliance theory. Ancient China of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period is also a place where ample examples of alliances can be found in a multipolar setting. Scriptures written during this period not only taught how to conduct foreign policy for the Chinese states that followed this period but also provide an important foreign policy guidance for the current Chinese leaders. Yet there have been few attempts to research on alliance theory that is covered in these ancient texts of China. To fill the gap we attempt to study the alliance theory of ancient China by comparing it with the present day western alliance theory. The result shows that even though it is hard to argue that the realist alliance theory of China is more detailed and meticulous in terms of definition, hypothesis-developing, variables, etc. than its western counterpart, it demonstrates remarkable similarity in the logic of alliance, what to consider when choosing an alliance (including geography), the differences of alliance choice between great powers and small states, the alliance security dilemma, etc. between the two. We expect this study helps Seoul’s foreign policy conduct by properly predicting present and future foreign policy choices of China.
