Along with the recent increase in the number of unwed mothers raising their children, there is a growing interest in unwed mother families in Korea. Despite weakened social prejudice against unwed mothers and improved government support, the majority of them are still suffering from economic difficulties and social prejudice. Women who had been employed at a solid workplace often fall into poverty after becoming an unwed mother. This paper tries to review the economic situations of unwed mothers raising their children living in community. Most previous studies have been based on unwed mothers residing in facilities. Focus group interviews and survey are employed to collect data. 117 mothers responded to the survey. Those unwed mothers without maternal facility experience tend to have higher income compared to those once resided in facility. Those mothers with children aged 36 months old and over have higher level of income and expenditure than those with less than 36 months. The proportion of the mothers with children less than 36 months living in parents or friend residence is higher than the others. Through these living arrangements, they seem to have in-kind support from their parents or friends. Adequate welfare support should be given to specially those mothers with children less than 36 months old. Unlike the old and the disabled, unwed mothers tend to need welfare services for a limited time period. Adequate welfare services would help unwed mothers and their children to lead a decent life.
