The research aims to identify Korean cultural traits in the glo-cal culture, K-pop, in its production, texts, and reception. As a result, the paper argues a Korean ethos, named ‘collective moralism’ as an organizing principle for K-pop as well as an important ethic of contemporary Korean culture. The analysis first finds the three big entertainment companies such as SM, YG, and JYP emphasize the character education for K-pop trainees as the key component of their ‘in-house system’. For example, the foremost behavioral guide for K-pop trainees is to be a ‘good person’ who refers to a person with diligence as well as respecting elders. The relationship between the heads of entertainment houses and young trainees is like a father-child one in a patriarchal family since the heads play role in educating, disciplining, and protecting trainees. The character education and relationship serve to buttress the production system by enabling young teenager trainees to endure a long-term (3∼8 years) training. In terms of texts, the research analysis shows that the themes of K-pop are confined to love songs and that K-pop idols’ attitudes and performances toward their fans are filled with gratitude and sincerity. Those characteristics are closely related with collective moralism which ultimately help to represent safe and wholesome K-pop rid of sex, violence, drug, etc. Lastly, with regard to the K-pop reception, the Korean public expect K-pop idols to meet their extremely high moral standard from modesty, diligence, even to historical consciousness and patriotism. If K-pop idols behave slightly out of line, Korean audiences are quick to critique idols’ behaviors. In sum, the paper contends that the ethos of collective moralism operating through K-pop constitutes and represents the K-pop’s distinctive Korean cultural identity, however globalized or hybridized K-pop may be.
