Yun Yeong-ryeol was one of the most famous officials and military officers during the Korean Empire. He was of noble birth.
After the Sino-Japanese War there were so many gangs of bandits in Korea. They attacked yangbans, peddlers, shop keepers and plundered local villages. Even though they disguised the Donghak Peasants Army or the Righteous Army, Korean Government thought most of them were really bandits who plundered local people of their property and disturbed the order of society. What they did was attacking, harrassing merchants, peasants, yangbans and women in the local area. Sometimes they pillaged yangbans" tombs of grave goods and traded their ancestor"s remains.
Anseong was a very famous county for business and goods in traditional society of Gyeonggi Province in Korea. It was also a very important traffic area of Gyeonggi Province near Seoul. This surroundings made Anseong attractive and cream area to the bandits and gangsters. Sino-Japanese War and weak government of Korea let them active in the local area. People couldn"t survive bandits" attack and plunder. They asked government remove the gangsters from Anseong.
Yun Yeongryeol worked 7 years as the Anseonggunsu (Anseong Magistrate) and commander for suppression of bandits of 3 provinces including Chungcheong and Gyeonggi Province. He did good job and was heartily praised by the local people. People raised stone or wooden monuments for memory of his good government. There remains 4 stone monuments for the memory of him in the central park of Anseong City. It was not the result of misgovernment and harass to the people, but the real good government and sacrifice of himself during the turbulent times of late 19th century and early 20th century.
