? The trend of thoughts of enlightenment were the central pillar of end of the 19th century to the early 20th century that led the Chinese politics and society, and literature played the leading role in practical politics and reformation, and showed general influence in production and distribution. Novels paid more attention in the objectives of enlightening the people and reforming from bottom up, by letting go of the higher hopes in the Qing government.
This thesis aims to delve into the changes in the Chinese literary field when the 4 great novels of the late Qing era when faced with modern medium, by focusing on the unprecedented rapid increase in novel creation and its trend in a time where sociopolitics is worth mentioning. I would like to examine the changes in the traditional writing styles when combined with new mediums, and what contents it tried to comprise as it made its way into the mainstreams of literature.
Novels which got out of the blind pursuit of tradition and were highlighted with patriotic passion were to reprobate the inability of government and the corruption of society, and to enlighten the ignorant people. The efforts to match verbal language and written language started in order to promote the political reform and social changes to a wider range of people. The reason why literature emphasized politics more than its artistic aspects, is due to the unique situation of Chinese history where literature was created amidst the liminal stages of social changes. The first step into literary reformation was already in the process, where “active literature” with a new ideology in a new era is attempted to be created, criticizing the traditional ideology and the old political system, and old social system of China, and the hierarchy of the literary language and the vernacular is collapsed. We should pay attention to the search of a transition period at the interface of literary transformation in the viewpoint of a creative change of the tradition.
