최근 우리나리에서는 필리핀 현지에서 채집되는 Anguilla marmorata와 A. bicolor pacifica의 실뱀장어 수입량이 증가하는 추세이다. 본 연구에서는 2014년 5월과 7월에 필리핀의 루손섬 북쪽과 민다나오섬 남쪽의 기수지역에서 채집된 실뱀장어를 대상으로 현지에서 적용 가능한 등지느러미의 위치와 꼬리지느러미의 색소세포 침착형태 등의 외부 형태적 특징을 바탕으로 한 판별기법을 유전자분석과 함께 실시하여 그 유효성을 검토하였다. 5월 루손섬 북쪽의 시료는 A. marmorata가 90% 이상이었으며, 민다나오섬 남쪽의 시료는 A. mamorata와 A. bicolor pacifica가 각각 36.7%, 63.3%였다. 7월의 민다나오섬 남쪽의 시료는 A. mamorata와 A. biolor pacifica가 각각 46.7%, 53.3%로, 두 종간의 외부 형태학적 특징을 바탕으로 하는 종 분류기법은 유전자분석 결과와 일치하여 유효한 것으로 사료된다.
