The objective of this study is to examine effects of departmental and time factors on wait time in Emergency Department (ED) and surgical wait times at a local general hospital. The three factors were departments, visit day, and visit time. Patient records were used and ANOVA and t-test were conducted for the test. ED visit days were categorized into (1) weekdays and (2) weekends or holidays, and ED visit times were categorized into (1) daytime (9 am to 5 pm) and (2) nighttime (5 pm to 9 am). Patients who visited ED were grouped according to severity classification, and inpatients to general wards and intensive care units (ICU) were tested. Consultation departments and visit times showed single effects on ED wait times of both inpatient groups and on surgical wait times of ICU inpatients. Visit days showed a single effect on ED wait times of general inpatients. In terms of interaction effects, the interaction between consultation departments and visit times was greater than the interaction between consultation departments and visit days. The result implies that each department needs to manage ED and surgical wait times by daytime and nighttime.
