The objective of this research is to find out the moderating role of innovation for business performance in small and mid-sized service companies. Therefore, this research employed independent variables, moderating variables, and dependent variables. The independent variables are company`s characteristics factors such as total asset, debt to equity ratio, capital adequacy ratio, and degree of operating leverage. The moderating variables are innovation activity factors such as asset-counted R&D investment, cost-counted R&D investment, R&D-to-sales ratio. And the dependent variables are business performance factors as labour productivity, operating profit, and sales. This research employed hierarchical regression to test moderating effect of innovation activities. The results indicate that innovation activities have significant moderating effects on labour productivity, operating profit, and sales, respectively. However, they are not significant on operating profit growth and sales growth. And the research found that the important variables depend on which types of business performance is considered. That is, different type of variables contribute to different type of performances. These empirical evidences could be a good guideline to the direction of business performance improvement in innovative small and mid-sized service companies.
