Cognitive linguistics, a school of linguistics which studies the relationship between universal principals of language and human cognitive rules, is able to reveal many linguistic phenomenon. The most important cognitive methods are metonymy and metaphor, which facilitate the development of lexical meaning from basic to extended and thus form a word’s polysemantic structure.
The Chinese ‘嘴/口’ and Korean ‘입/-구’ fundamentally represent human visual organ and this sense can be developed to other extended meanings via metonymy and metaphor, which are usually specific and abstract. The basis meanings of these two characters are similar. However, their meanings are developed in distinct ways. As a result, their extended meanings are not completely corresponding to each other.
In this essay, meanings from dictionaries and comparative and cognitive linguistics applied as background theories are used to analyze how fundamental meanings of Chinese ‘嘴/口’ and Korean ‘입/-구’ are projective from organ to other conceptual fields. The result shows that, the projective (extended) meanings are entirely different even both characters share the same basic meanings and developed direction. This is because the cross-domain mapping is not only influenced by internal linguistic factors, but also by external factors including human society, history, culture and etc. Nevertheless, no matter ‘嘴/口’ or ‘입/-구’, we can see that their cross-domain mapping all started from their fundamental meaning, turned the connotation from specific to abstract and developed through metonymy and metaphor.
