Abuse of women by clergy has been acknowledged to exist as an insidious transdenominational, interdenominational, and intradenominational problem that plagues a diverse spectrum of religious organizations throughout the country and even around the world. Sexual abuse of women by clergy is not a new phenomenon. In fact, the problem itself is centuries old, but it has been hidden for generations due to social and culture norms, religious authoritarian structures, and personal psychological factors. However, sexual abuse by clergy is not the sole sin. In most instances, our congregations have been equally responsible, as they have participated in concealing the abuse. In order to protect cherished illusions of the clergyperson as parent, protector, and god, as well as the fantasy of the perfect family, congregants have scapegoated the truth-tellers and deeply damaged their families of faith. Secret-keeping has proved more abusive, in the long run, than the original incidents.
As Christians, we need to be proactive and discover the courage to change the tradition of secrecy by understanding the sexual abuse of women by clergy through pastoral counselling. This article focuses on the complex and diverse causes of clergy sexual abuse, - including the patriarchy-sociocultural context, problems with mentalizing, the distorted interpretation of Biblical sexuality , the absence of ethics education and supervision in ministry. Finally, recommendations will be offered from the point of view of pastoral counselling to help prevent sexual abuse by clergy.
