Entomological and virological surveys of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been carried out to predict the occurrence of Japanese encephalitis epidemics from mid June to mid September, duration of which is known as the period of pre-epidemic and epidemic season in the Republic of Korea. Busan city, Gwangju city and Goyang Gun which are located in southem, southwestern and central area respectively were selected for this survey. The results obtained from our surveys were summarized as following: 1. The time that the first collected vector mosquito was the 2nd week of June by the light trap in Busan city. 2. It was found that more than 50% H-I antibody of JE converted time among the less than 1 year old slaughter house pigs were the 2nd week of August in Busan, the 4th week of August in Gwangju and the 2nd week of September in Goyang areas. 3. In view of seasonal prevalence of vector mosquitoes, the population of Culex tritaeni- orhynchuswas changed as dominant species in the 1st week of August and the peak of the population was marked in the 2nd week of August in Busan area. Numbers of the vectar populations in Gwangju and Goyang Gun were very low through the survey season, several factors of which were discussed.
