This essay discusses how the tradition of Nabonidus was transformed into the accounts of Nebuchadnezzar in Jewish literature. In the “Prayer of Nabonidus” (= 4QPrNab), Nabonidus" sojourn at Teima for ten years functioned as a literary theme to ridicule Nebuchadnezzar their archenemy. The substitution of Nebuchadnezzar for Nabonidus seems to have happened, too, in the book of Abydenus, Concerning the Assyrians, which had probably inspired the author of Dan 4:25-30. The Nabonidus tradition reappears in the “Lives of the Prophets” and the Syrian version of the Story of Ahiqar in the guise of Nebuchadnezzar.
The primary purpose of the Jewish literature examined here is to show the supremacy of the true God of Israel and contrast Him with false gods. In order to serve the purpose, the Jewish authors did not hesitate to transform their historical memory of Nabonidus into the contemptible description of their archenemy Nebuchadnezzar.

지금까지 나보니두스를 연구하는 학자들의 주된 관심사는 신바빌로니아 제국 마지막 시기의 그의 정치적 행적들과 그가 바빌론을 떠나 북아라비아의 테마(Teima)에 정착한 이유와 관련된 역사적 정황에 대한 분석에 있었다. 이렇게 나보니두스에 관한 연구자들의 관심이 편중된 시점에서, 본 연구는 테마에서 장장 10년을 거주했던 나보니두스의 기이한 행적이 후대의 유대교 문헌에서 어떻게 다루어졌는지를 분석해 본다.
「나보니두스의 기도」에서는 나보니두스의 기괴한 테마 거주가 유대인들의 원수 네부카드네자르에 대한 조롱거리로 활용가능한 문학적 소재로서 기능을 하게 되었다. 필자는 「나보니두스의 기도」와 다니엘 4장이 하나의 공통된 자료에서 발전되어 나갔고, 이 자료는 구전 전승이기보다는 문서 전승이었을 가능성을 제시하였다.
아비데누스의 「아시리아인들에 관하여」에서도 마찬가지로 나보니두스가 네부카드네자르로 대체되었다. 나보니두스 전승은「예언자들의 삶」에 네부카드네자르의 이름에 감추어진 채로 다시 등장한다. 또한 나보니두스의 기이한 행적은 고대 근동 세계에 두루 알려진 아히카르 이야기의 시리아 판본에서도 그 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있을 만큼 여러 작가들과 독자들에게 흥밋거리가 되었음이 분명하다.
여기에서 논의되는 유대교 문헌들이 궁극적으로 의도하는 바는 이스라엘의 진정한 하나님의 우월성을 드러내고 그를 거짓 신들과 대조시키려는 것이다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위하여 이 작품들의 저자들은 그들의 철천지원수인 네부카드네자르를 경멸적으로 묘사하기 위하여 나보니두스에 대한 역사적 전승을 변형시켜 활용하는 데에 전혀 주저함이 없었다. 결국 유대교 문헌에서 네부카드네자르는 고집스런 폭군이요, 하나님의 심판을 받은 자의 대명사처럼 되었고, 기괴한 인물 나보니두스에 대한 기억은 이러한 네부카드네자르의 위장막에 감추어진 채로 후대에 전해지게 되었다.
