This study aimed to explore ‘things’ reflected by publications of the later Ming
dynasty through ‘Zhengqi(爭氣)’ series generated in Jianyang Area of China in the 1620s. Things mentioned herein mean man-made and natural structures, phenomena and incidents as visible or imaginable ‘objects.’ The later Ming Dynasty was a prime period of the publication industry and the edited type publications. Edited publications mean publications collecting, arranging and publishing works written by original authors. ‘Zhengqi’ series is made up of 7 series initially developed by a renowned novelist and editor, Deng Zhimo (鄧志謨) but another authors following Jianyang produced its subsequent series. Unlike general publication types at that time, those publications did not go through final alteration, introduction remarks or comment by famous figures but were published only by publication experts working for publishing firms. The way ‘Zhengqi’ series was made up and thought was deeply influenced by the then popular knowledge of natural history. According to traditional learning methods, man has to gain the single principle piercing things but ‘Zhengqi’ series enumerates, in parallel, things with no absolute prerequisites. This parallel structure is opposed to the traditional concept of reasoning. However, ‘Zhengqi’ series as a commercial publication mainly pursues after pleasure, for which they re-quote and transform cannons. Types of ‘things’ expressed by ‘Zhengqi’ series have much to do with discourse on ‘things’ explored by the then elites. Literary people, who were influential at that time, analyzed relation between things, the self and the society through ‘connoisseurship literature.’ ‘Zhengqi’ and ‘connoisseurship literature’ all selected the material-centeredness. Besides, they states their excellence through comparison between both. In ‘Zhengqi’ series, however, we can’t find worries over the social fluctuation of the later Ming Dynasty expressed by ‘connoisseurship literature’ and the desire to express the self. On the contrary, ‘Zhengqi’ series insinuates antagonism towards discourse on ‘things,’ insisting that mutual competition in this way should have no fundamental significance.
