As changes in games can reflect one in urbanism, games have been a window that observes human society and its transitions. Along with urbanization and industrialization, the games people play change in regard of time, place, participants, and skills. However, there’s not enough research on the relationship between traditional games and urban life. Take this into consideration, the current paper takes the diabolo game in Beijing as a case to study traditional games in urban life, especially the function and meaning of the games to urban life. After long-term fieldwork, the paper examines the impact of diabolo games on people’s life, with special attention paying to the way of how urban folk establish their social relationship through traditional games. Furthermore, the paper explores the change of urban social space and its relationship to the development of diabolo games in Beijing.
Diabolo game is a representative children’s play in Hutung, Beijing and is very prevalent on the New Year’s Day. It has been firmly established as the culture of leisure in Beijing and helped the citizens to socialize. This thesis will inquire how traditional folk plays have developed and have been transmitted in the urban life by studying diabolo, Beijing’s folk game. In addition, it will inquire into the roles of diabolo actors as unique participants in diabolo and the government’s role in helping diabolo game.
