In rural areas, village community culture is being reorganized and revitalized centering around villagers" halls including senior citizen centers In other words, villagers in rural areas where the population is decreasing and growing older are reinventing their community culture centering around village halls When villagers have free time, especially during the winter months, they prefer to be in village halls rather than stay at home While spending most of their free time together with others in village halls, they practice their community culture, conscious of belonging to the same community, communicating with each other, and sharing resources with others in the community The community culture thus formed and defined is composed of several types of activities such as meeting, food sharing, talking, information sharing, playing, leisure activities, time-killing labor, and festivities Except for the meeting for community culture, most of these cultural activities are loosely organized This is because the elderly meet their community needs voluntarily Various backgrounds and factors have contributed to the function of village halls as the space for practicing the community culture activities: smaller and older population, subsidy for the construction of village halls, national support fund for the elderly"s circles, free use of village halls, agricultural off-season"s prolonged duration, and the elderly"s new perception of the importance of social relationships As for the socioeconomic aspect, the residents voluntarily contribute to the operation of village halls Though such contribution is mainly from those socially high-ranked and economically viable, villagers" voluntary contribution to the expense of being together in the community space was rarely found in rural areas before industrialization The community culture in rural areas right after industrialization weakened, but it is being formed and revitalized, especially in winter, centering around village halls in such ways and structures as are quite different from those of the old days Accordingly, it can safely be said that the community culture is being reorganized and recreated centering around village halls This phenomenon is the process which clearly shows that people in rural areas are culturally responding and adapting to national policies, economic structures, and social systems considering their situations and conditions.
