Samguk Yusa(Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) is known to be the works of Monk Ilyeon from the late 13th century of Goryeo Dynasty. It is inferred that the book was circulated in a woodcut printed version before the end of the Goryeo Dynasty, however the present oldest complete version is the Jeongdeok Imsin Version published in 1512. According to this version, Samguk Yusa consists of 9 chapters, 5 books and 2 volumes. Out of the 9 chapters, Chapter Wangryeok (literally the Calendar of Kings) is compiled together with parts of the Chapter Gii(Chapter of Wonders) to formulate the first volume. However out of all the chapters, Chapter Wangryeok is notorious for its poor condition of the print. Numerous characters are erased from the text, whilst in some places entire sentences are eliminated, and many cases of mistaken letters have been found. Therefore the academic field of ancient Korean history has longed for the finding of an earlier version of the Chapter Wangryeok. In the midst of this situation, recently a printed version of the Samguk Yusa has been open to the public by the Yonsei University Museum, which is clearly an earlier printed version than the Jeongdeok Imsin Version. This version has been named the Pareun Version, named after the penname of its collector, the late Professor Son Bogi of Yonsei University. The first volume of the Pareun Version also consists of Chapter Wangryeok and parts of Chapter Gii. When comparing the contents of Chapter Wangryeok between the Jeongdeok Version and the Pareun Version, the latter is confirmed to be the earliest printed version known sofar, and the woodblocks are conjectured to have been engraved right after the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty in 1392. Although some of the problems found in the Jeongdeok Version can also be found in the Pareun Version, it has also revealed much new historical evidence as well. In short, the Pareun version of the Chapter Wangryeok in Samguk Yusa is now known to be in the best condition.
