In this article, we have examined confluence between the Augustinian tradition and the Dionysian thought in terms of “the Augustinian immediacy” and “the Dionysian mediation” as formulated by Wayne Hankey. For Augustine, the theological centrality of Christ, the sole mediator between God and humankind, lies in the heart of his idea of immediacy. On the other hand, pseudo-Dionysius has adopted the triadic cycle of remaining, procession and return as attributed to the metaphysical dialectics of the later Neo-Platonism, in building up his own theological system. Accordingly, the return of the soul to the Thearchic source as mediated by angels in the intellectual realm is an essential element of his theological system. Dionysius’s notion of mediation is crystallized into the concept of hierarchia characterized by the idea of inalterable order between the superior and the inferior ranks. The two streams of the Christian thought have encountered each other several times in the medieval Latin West. We have noticed, first of all, Eriugena’s Expositiones on the Dionysian Celestial Hierarchy and Hugh of St. Victor’s Commentaria in Hierarchiam in terms of the convergence between the Dionysian mediation and the Augustinian immediacy. In the next place, we have analyzed certain related texts of Itinerarium mentis in Deum written by Bonaventure, a 13th-Century Franciscan theologian. The findings may enable us to evaluate his achievements to be highly successful in that he has made possible a genuine convergence between the Dionysian thought and the Augustinian tradition by adapting Dionysius’s motif of hierarchy to his system of theology even without losing the focal point of “the mediation of Christ” as derived from the Augustinian matrix of the medieval Latin theology.
