The aim of this dissertation is to reexamine Korea`s initial introduction and embracement of Protestantism from a critical point of view. In the late Chosoˇ n Dynasty, Protestantism was introduced and accepted in different ways depending on regions of the Korean Peninsula. Before the year 1884 when American Protestant missionaries came to Korea, the leadership of society played a central role in the introduction and embracement of Protestantism and the religious faith was recognized as a tool for modernization, being intertwined with the political and diplomatic pressure of the surrounding or Western powers. This is distinct from the pre?existing perspectives on Korean church history in the introduction and embracement of Protestantism. This study explored the background to the introduction of Protestantism in the South area based on the then diplomatic issues of the Korean Peninsula, such as the pillage of the peninsula by China, Japan and Western powers. In addition, the study examined how the perspectives of Chinese, Japanese, U.S. diplomatic representatives and missionaries were related with the introduction of Protestantism in Korea. By considering the introduction of Protestantism in Korea in connection with the nation`s status as a dependent state of Qing Dynasty, the present study discussed the Imo Incident, military mutiny of 1882, the Gapsin Coup of 1884, and the Bobingsa, Korea diplomatic mission to the U.S. in 1883 and examined the perception of Protestantism in the South with focus on the leadership of society.
