Recently, in Korea, a lot of theologian are interested in the so-called ``public theology`` that has the socio-cultural background of western civil society. According to Stackhouse known as a pioneer of public theology, it considers the roll of Christianity and church in contemporary pluralistic society. So public theology is the claim in which one can present theologically rooted arguments conerning human identity, norms, and society in ways that can be considered and understood beyond one`s particular confessional context(Hainsworth & Paeth). Yet considering the immature situation of Korean civil society, the practice of public theology has to focus more on cultural realm to enlarge the social publicness through communal solidarity and voluntary participation in daily civil life. At this point, this study argues that local society is a very proper field for Korean local churches to practice public theology, so that it could give a theological insight for building up the cultural community especially in urban area. Most of main line churches in Korea don`t care about local society, and so churches in city area are getting more and more isolated from local society. To overcome this situation, we have to find out the applicable model of doing ``public theology`` in a local level. In order to catch hold of the possibility of local community build-up as a practice of public theology in Korea, this study took the examples of US, and tried to apply them in a certain local church of Seoul. As a conclusion, this study suggests that local community build-up as a cultural practice of public theology has to start by attempting network between public subjects and contents in a local area. By engaging in that network, local churches can develop the well-being of the local communities and give a moral guide to support their daily life. Public theology should go beyond scholastic discourse to be activated in civil life.
