According to Schleiermacher`s theology, the essence of faith is the encounter of the finite with the infinite in intuition and emotion. Therefore, this emotional theology do not have to be critical. For Bultmann, faith is an anticipatory determination for authentic being in the face of the proclamation of the Gospel. Similar to Schleiermacher`s theology, neither does this existential theology. But theology should be necessarily critical, which has much interest in liberation from all kinds of violence, suppression, and injustice. The critical theology of E. Schillebeeckx tries to combine critique to faith without losing the latter`s autonomy. But his critical theology is in danger of relativism when compared with L. Kohlberg`s developmental theory of morality and J. W. Fowler`s developmental theory of faith.
