The present paper aims to articulate the leadership of St. Ignatius Loyola who founded the Society of Jesus in 1540. Author`s research interest is to disclose Igantius` spiritual leadership, as known as "Ignatian Spirituality", which has left significant influence upon the emergence of the early Jesuit mission theology. Ignatius` leadership comes from his spiritual mission statement. which could be summarized as "finding God in all things". Ignatius and the early Jesuit leaders wanted to find God in all things within their acts of ministry and personal pursuit of spirituality. Following the "Ignatian Spirituality", they did not reject or avoid crowed and troublesome cities. Their attitude toward city culture was different from other traditional mendicant orders` appreciation of the medieval cities. The mendicants first built their monasteries and headquarters on the place of countryside, remote from the cities. After the 13th century, however, the major mendicant orders began to build their city cathedrals in the European cities within the triangular pattern of emplacement. When the Jesuits were organized and began their ministry of "saving souls" from 1540, they had to first find the Jesuit headquarters of the cities where the mendicants had already occupied before they came in. The Jesuits marched toward the center of the cities. ignoring traditional triangular emplacement of the city cathedrals. It was Jesuits` calculated and intended move toward the center of cities because they believed that cities were God` s main stage for the salvation of human beings. This kind of audacious approach toward the major European cities was possible due to Ignatian spirituality and his leadership. The Jesuits` positive approach to the center of city extended to the major mission fields as the Constitutions of the Jesuits clearly defines "great nations and cities" as their mission priority. Ignatian leadership based on his spirituality, "finding God in all things", also influenced upon the early Jesuit mission theology regarding non-Christian cultures. Early Jesuit missionaries, like Matteo Ricci in China, Jose de Acosta in Peru. and Roberto de Nobili in South India, approached to the "pagan" local culture of mission field in order to find a point of missionary contact. They did not reject local culture as pagan belief systems. Rather their approach to local culture represents a lucid example of Ignatian spirituality, attempting to find God in all things.
