The purpose of this study is to vindicate traditional historical criticism as a major method in the Old Testament interpretation from several trends doubting its appropriateness and effectiveness since 1960s. First of all, we contour four realities which have negative views against historical criticism. They are synchronic interpretation, canonical approach, postmodernism, Jewish theology and Protestant fundamental theology. Four issues that these anti-historical criticism raise are diachrony vs. synchrony, historical vs. literary interpretation, objective vs. subjective, `what it meant` vs. `what is means` , and theological contribution to the faith community. We argue that these issues were generated by the ideological distortion and prejudices against historical criticism. It is also admitted that historical criticism is not a perfect but incomplete method with its own limitation. It is, therefore, necessary for historical criticism to be more developed in this postmodern world. For this task, two aspects are to be facilitated. They are the nature of history as a literary genre and the definition of literature as a social construct. So we suggest that historical criticism incorporate at least three perspectives of highly artful literary sensitivities, social scientific criticism recently accumulated in vast amount of information on the society and the religious life of ancient Israel, and ideological criticism which probes that biblical texts have their own theological preferences in concrete historial circumstances. Persistent antagony between diachronic methods and synchronic ones brought about by religious ideology and its concomitant prejudices should he ceased now. Instead, dialogues and cooperation between different disciplines in Old Testament interpretation are to be actively pursued, only for the sake of the coexistence and respect of various exegetical methods and the fair hearing of biblical voices which can give life to the faith communities.
