Is it possible to raise a question? How did God heal Jonah? If he is to be healed, Jonah has to be recognized as a patient. Why was Jonah avoiding God`s message by running away from His sight? The book of Jonah describes a man` s individuation process to establish Self as well as the prophetic vocation of Jonah. Traditionally understanding, Jonah is one of the Israelite prophets who was standing against God` s will. Differently from other prophets, however, Jonah was struggling to hold his traditional view of Jewish nationalism rather than following God`s message. Although he repented and finally praised God in Chapter 2, it was not too long to come back original state of Jonah who was still depending on the Jewish ideology. The book of Jonah describes the psychological transformation of Jonah little by little, which was accomplished through hard training of God. Despite all these, Jonah still remain a human being who always makes a mistake. From these points of view, it is valuable to look at the book of Jonah from Jung` s analytical psychology. Jonah`s struggling displays an individuation process to reach Self, where he can see God`s sight. Chapter 1 introduces Jonah`s avoiding God`s commandment. The fact that Jonah fled to Tarshish shows that he ran away from his Self. Jonah rejected God`s commandment instead of confronting his current problem which urged him to deliver God`s salvation to the people of Nineveh. His avoiding attitude had been hid in his individual unconscious. The fact that he went down to the bottom of the ship and was asleep in the face of the threatening wind supports Jonah`s avoiding trend. In chapter 2, Jonah deeply repented his disobey of God` s will. The prayer in the belly of the fish shows the reader Jonah` s rebirth out of death. Jonah` s prayer for three days reflected his repentance of running away from God`s sight. At this moment, Jonah seems to reach his Self. Chapter 3, however, reminds us of human being`s original state which is not constant in whole life. Differently from the attitude in chapter 2, Jonah reluctantly followed God`s commandment. When he saw the repentance of the people of Nineveh, Jonah was so depressed because of the possibility of divine salvation toward them. He got angry in chapter 4 where God and Jonah exchanged dialogue several times. The miraculous events through the bush and a worm in chapter 4, God reveals Jonah`s psychological state, which is easily found in human beings. God`s last question made Jonah think of himself who still clung to Jewish nationalism which did not allow delivering salvific message to foreign countries. Although he was still standing between God`s universal love and Jewish idealism, Jonah seems to be struggling to find out God`s truth which leads his Self. The story of Jonah, from this point of view, guides us to understand Jonah`s psychology based on Jung`s analytical psychology. God healed Jonah by giving some opportunities through which Jonah found out himself(Self). During that process, God endured and encouraged him. The story of Jonah, thus, is a good example of the biblical and pastoral healing.
