This paper presents an implementation of real-time auto-focus algorithm for DM814x-based IP network camera. TI DM814x processor family provides AF H/W engine which calculates focus value, a measure of sharpness of the image. Thus, auto-focusing is usually achieved by searching the peak position of the focus value curve. However, under some harsh environments such as low lighting, focus value curve calculated by IIR filter of AF engine may show complicate fluctuations due to noises or some other reasons so that searching peak becomes unreliable. Then, more complete auto-focusing becomes difficult to achieve. In this paper, we first configure the IIR filter coefficients from many experiments so that the calculated focus value curve has small fluctuation variation so as to make searching peak position become more reliable. Then, a simple but effective peak focus search algorithm based on rule-based search algorithm is proposed. It is shown through various experiments that the proposed auto-focus algorithm can achieve good accuracy and real-time performance.
