An exaggerated blood pressure response mediated by exercise in prehypertensives occurs because of the overactive muscle metaboreflex activation, increasing the high possibility of cardiac events. It is suggested that nattokinase supplementation reduces the blood pressure in prehypertensives at rest. However, it is not clear that nattokinase supplementaton improves the function of muscle metaboreflex and reduce blood pressure in response to exercise. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nattokinase on muscle metaboreflex in prehypertensives during exercise. Ten prehypertensive subjects were recruited in this study. This study was designed to randomized, double blind, crossover way for 8 wk nattokinase or placebo supplementation. All subjects were continuously instrumented to measure stroke volume, heart rate, cardiac output (CO), total vascular conductance (TVC), and blood pressure on beat by beat devices during static exercise and post exercise muscular ischemia (PEMI). The results indicated that nattokinase supplementation tended to decrease resting systolic blood pressure, but there was no statical significant difference in systolic blood pressure. There were no differences in mean arterial blood pressure and TVC between two groups during static exercise and PEMI. Thus, this study suggests that nattokinase supplementation may not alter the dysfunction of muscle metaboreflex in prehypertensives. It needs to be done further with high dose of nattokinase supplementation in the future.
