The purposes of this study was to estimate the frequency and incidence rate of Taekwondo object-breaking maneuver-related acute injury. The prospective cohort study design was utilized. A total of 230 competitors, 205 competitors(mean age 27 years old, males) were participated in this study. Injury data were collected via an individual telephone interview when conducted 10-days later the completion of competition. In results, a total of 42 athletes(for 50 cases) were injured. The overall injury rate was 6 injuries per 100 athlete-exposures(95% CI: 5-8). The power-breaking part showed higher injury frequency than the technique-breaking part(64% vs 36%). Also, the foot(including toes) showed the highest injury frequency(44%) among other body parts. There were significant differences between overall injury rates and a competition category, past history of injury, chronic pain experience, and breaking-skill training by x2-test. In conclusions, Taekwondo object-breaking-related injury rate was relatively middle. To reduce this injury rate and severity, a conversion of the impact area from top of the foot to ball of the foot wit h Dol-gae-cha-ki and the instant first-aid(icing) service at the competition site are recommended. Also, continuing research on this topic is required.
