The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of lifestyle factors including body fatness, cardio/respiratory fitness, and smoking on the clustering phenomenon of the metabolic syndrome (MetSyn) risk factors in college male students. A total of 807 male students were consecutively recruited from those who registered in an elective lecture "Exercise, Nutrition, and Health" during the spring and fall semesters of 2008-2009 at the S university. All the participants underwent a health-related questionnaire including smoking and drinking habits. Fasting blood samples were collected in heparin-treated tubes for the determinations of lipids and glucose levels. Resting blood pressures were measured in duplicate on seated positions. Cardio/respiratory fitness (CRF) was quantified as the maximum minute volume of oxygen consumption(VO2max) during a graded exercise test on a motor-driven treadmill. The clustering of the MetSyn risk factors was defined as the sum of Z-scores for each components of the five MetSyn risk factors based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ criteria modified for Asian population. The current findings of the study show that smoking, body fatness, and CRF are not only significantly related to most of the MetSyn risk factors but also independent predictors of the clustering phenomenon of the MetSyn risk factors in college male students.
