The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of balance training on the EEG of the chronic stroke patients who lack of brain plasticity by identifying most influential factors in recovery. The subjects of this study were divided into two groups : experimental (n=10) and control groups (n=10). The experimental groups received balance training while the control group received walking exercise on a treadmill. Each group conducted the training for 60 minutes a day three times a week for 16 weeks. The following are the results of the analysis; 1) The Differences caused by exercise methods In the EEG analysis, significant differences were found in effects testing of alpha value(p=.018) and beta value(p=.002) in changes according to the two groups during exercises. 2) The Differences caused by exercise duration In the EEG analysis, significant differences were found in effects testing of alpha value and beta value in changes according to both during gait and during rest. 3) Correlations in each factor In the EEG analysis, it has been found that there are correlations both during rest(p=.032) and during gait(p=.006) of alpha value, and also it has been found that there are correlations both during rest(p=.026) and during gait(p=.000) of beta value. In the brain activation beta value during gait is more activated than alpha value during resting, and it needs more than a 16 week exercise. As a result, continuous balance training is able to improve overall functional recovery in chronic stroke patients.
