The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between sports goal orientation and coping strategy. The total sample size was on 918 (male;589, female;329) athletes including Korean national team members, junior-high school, high school, college and professional athletes. Perceptions Of Success Questionnaire and the Athletic Coping Skills Inventory were mainly used to collect the data. The results are the following. First, the difference between sports goal orientation and coping skills strategy did not show significant variation, especially in sports goal orientation. Coping skills, peaking under pressure, concentration, goal setting and mental preparation, however showed a higher level based on different age groups. Also, top performers revealed to show higher level of peaking under pressure, goal setting and mental preparation. Regression analysis was used to investigate the relationship between coping strategy and sport task orientation. The results varied according to different age groups. To junior-high school athletes, freedom from worries and peaking under pressure showed significant impact. Goal setting and mental preparation and peaking under pressure variables showed significant effects on high school athletes. Coachability and goal setting and mental preparation variables were explaining task goal orientation to college and professional athletes. Regression analysis were used on different age groups to find the relationship between coping strategy and competition goal orientation. According to the results, goal setting and mental preparation, freedom from worry, peaking under pressure showed significant effects on junior high athletes. Goal setting and mental preparation showed significant effects on high school athletes. Concentration variables explained competition goal orientation on college and professional athletes. Setting goals and mental preparation explained the task goal orientation of top performer athletes. Moreover, setting goal and mental preparation with coachability, concentration, freedom from worry explained task goal orientation of average athletes. Finally, according to the discriminant analysis setting goals and mental preparation were significant variables among coping strategy to distinguish between top and average performer athletes. And peaking under pressure variable was significant to junior-high, high school, college and professional athletes. These results were conducted based on previous studies and further analysis are needed to improve and illuminate theoretical discussion.
