As community drastically became weakened due to industrialization and urbanization, traditional community was destructed. Therefore, new community development suitable to specialized and diversified modern cities ate being required, and the mechanism of the new community development can be suggested in sports which has the ability to overcome it with its good points. The purpose of this study is to prove empirically the possibility of contribution toward the new community development through community residents' various participation in sports. As subjects for study, participants in sport among Taejon Metropolitan City residents were set up, and then total samples of 1,100 copies were collected using the cluster random sampling. Among them samples of 82 copies estimated either poor answers or worthless materials were excluded. Therefore, finally, samples of 1,018 copies were employed for data analysis. Schematized questionnaires based on self-administration method were used. Items of questionnaires related to community development were used after testing validity and reliability through preliminary test. As statistic techniques to analyze the collected data, factor analysis, frequency analysis, regression analysis of SPSSWIN were served Results are as follows. First, sociodemographic characteristic has an effect on urban community development second, use of sport facilities has an effect on urban community development Third, social interaction has an effect on urban community development. The results of this study indicate that participation in sport has an effect on urban community development This implies that through the medium of sport based on community sport facilities, contact of residents can get strong, in there community consciousness can get fostered, and affection, solidarity, role-feeling to the community can get awakened, and active community participation can get facilitated, therefore it can be an important mechanism to form new ideal urban community.
