The purpose of this study was to verify the caffeine effects on metabolism and peformance during prolonged Exercise. Seventeen subjects ingested caffeine and resting heart rate was measured for 90 minutes. Based on the changes in resting hears rate, ten subjects were divided into two groups(group A: increase in resting geart rate after caffeine ingertion was larger than other subjects; group B:increase in resting heart rate was smaller than other subjects). Then, ten subjects exercised until exhaustion with either caffeine of placebo ingestion `60 minutes before the beginning of exercese. Factorial ANOVA repeated measure was applied was applied for the statistical analysis (group (2) × treatment(2) × time(4,5). Independent variables were groups and treatments. Dependent variables were FFA, VO_2, VE, RER, lactate, RPE, heart. rate, total exercise time. The results were as follows: 1. There was FFA cocentration difference between two groups. Caffeine ingestion significantly increased FFA concentration before and during exercise compared to placebo ingestion. 2. There was no difference in lactic acid concentration during exercise. 3. There was no difference in respiratory exchange ratio during exercise. 4. There was no difference in oxygen consumption and ventilation volume during exercise. 5. After caffeine ingestion, ratings of perceived exertion was during exercise compared to placebo ingestion. 6. Exercise heart rate was higher after caffeine compared to placebo ingestion. 7. In group A, total exercise time after caffeine ingestion was longer than placebo trials. However, there was no difference between two treatments in group B.
