The defective reality in which we live has been a hotbed of various utopian thoughts. But recently, man seems to feel very tired of the utopian imaginations on ideal community. The most important reason for this is to be found in the collective trauma and impotent feeling which the two representative totalitarian utopianisms of the 20th century, Nazism and Marxism packed into the memory of mankind. But I wrote this essay based on the citical mind that the disqualification of the two criminal utopianisms does not need to result in the disqualification of utopia in general. We could never escape our present bad and unjust reality without endeavoring to make the better and more just community. It is because mankind raised the reflectively filtered new hope that it could overcome the despair and fear which Gulag and Holocaust left. Then, we should learn, not the impotence which surrenders to fear, but how to hope in the rational and responsible way, from the failed utopian experiments of the 20th century. Today, progress became something possible but non-necessary like retrogression because we do not believe in the linear progress of human history anymore. It is the very essential openness of human history that again discloses the utopian dimension of our thinking and restores the significance of responsible historic choices. In this point, utopia will be still living in our thinking as the ‘reflected present’ which normatively leads our ever-changing present.
