Avian brood parasitism is an excellent model system for coevolution, which is one of fundamental biological processes that maintains the biodiversity on earth. Determining host species is the first and foremost step in the study of host-parasite coevolution, but this information is rarely available for brood parasites breeding in Korea: Cuculus canorus, C. optatus, C. micropterus, C. poliocephalus, and Hierococcyx hyperthrus. In order to determine which host species are parasitized by those parasite species in Korea, a systematic web and literature search was conducted. As a result, it was found that 11 host species were exploited by the five species of brood parasites in Korea.; C. canorus used six host species (including one species indirectly identified via a genetic analysis) while C. optatus, C. poliocephalus and H. hyperythrus parasitized three, two and one different host species, respectively. Unfortunately, host species for C. micropterus were not found in this study. Both C. canorus and C. optatus parasitized Phoenicurus auroreus, and interestingly, two color morphes (immaculate blue or light grey with black stripes) of C. canorus eggs were found in the nest of this species in the Korean mainland. Overall, a comparative study for host species used by C. canorus in north-east Asia suggests that the number of host species may be considerably underestimated in Korea. Further studies determining hosts of the five brood parasites will be worthwhile in terms of accumulating knowledge of our biological resources as well as providing potential new insights into coevolutionary theory.
