The Myeonbok from the Joseon Dynasty are made of Myeon, Ui, Joongdan, Sang, Peseul, Peok, Hoosoo, Daedae, Okdae, Mal, Seok, Gyu and Bangsimgokyeong.
The Myeonbok set the King wore does not exist and only the Ui and Joongdan are stored at the National Museum of Korea. To recreate the Myeonryugwan in this circumstance, 25 documents, photographs and similar artifacts were investigated. We made effort to recreate the Myeonpan, Gwanmoo and ornaments such as Jam and jade based on the design drawing drawn based on the investigation.
The Myeonpan was made with Paulownia corcana based on the documents and was lacquered. Then the inside was backed with a layer of black silk and the outside with pink silk. Gwanmoo was made with bamboo and weaved in a hexagonal pillar-like shape like a basket then lacquered. The edges of the Gwanmoo is added with golden trimmings with the shape of a cloud. Okrang is made of white jade and in a 23.4cm long stick shape. A diagonal hole around 0.2cm was carved in each end of it. According to the documents, Jam is made of silver which is gilded. The shape was made based on the photograph of king Soonjong’s Myeonryugwan and the size was recreated based on the portrait of a king Ikjong, references to King Soonjong’s Myeonbok and restoration documents of Myeonryugwan found from Jeongruing in China.
The recreated Myeonryugwan from this study will be used to help understand the royal costumes.
