This research work intends to assess the trend in Colombia of the environmental protection and biodiversity which seems to be inversely proportional to the guideline of the process of economic, political and institutional development of the country. It means, the more development of the country, the less protection of the environment, or in other words, the more development, the more destruction of the environment. In particular, this paper emphasizes in the environment destruction generated mainly by the mining, which is has been appointed as the new growing engine of the economic development of Colombia.
The research has been structured with a theoretical framework on development and sustainability of the environment, followed by an analysis methodology of endangered species in Colombia related to the mineral development and later with the analysis of the Mining Census 2010 ? 2011presented by the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Colombia which shows the huge problems of the illegal mining in Colombia. Then the research presents and analyses the failures of the current mining law, known as the Mining Code in Colombia, which leaves many doubts for open interpretation which allows the mining activities operating without considering the impact in the Colombia soil with catastrophic results for the environment. Finally the conclusions of this study are presented, based on the data found and analyzed.
The results of the investigation lead us to evaluate that the current trend of environmental protection, is not having the expected results in Colombia, but instead the mining development of the country, which is the new engine of growth of the Colombian economy, is having devastating effects on the Colombian environment which are hidden or unrecognized by the Colombian government in its effort to obtain immediate profits to support the process of economic, political and institutional development.
