Korean paintings have formed two kinds of the trend such as the succession of tradition and modern awareness in a rapidly changing situation in East Asia in 20th century, the succession of the pen name of Sim(心) started from Simjeon (心田) An Jung-sik continues its tradition as Simsan(心汕) No Su-hyeon, Simkyong(心耕) Park Se-won, Simjeong(心井) Lim Song-Hee in the faculty of Arts in Seoul National University later, Sim(心) aesthetics in mental aspects in arts based on oriental aesthetics the four persons pursue have been made through the practice of idea landscape and real scenery landscape that are two prominent kinds of Korean landscape painting, and it becomes linked into the legitimacy of Korean landscape painting.
Oriental landscape paintings sought the value of the spirit aesthetics different from that of western landscape paintings. Oriental landscape paintings make the harmony with nature more important than any other factors, as aesthetic subjects, that is, painter’s Sim(心) and nature are fused into one, it’s considered to be the best state of landscape paintings that Sim(心) and nature place order corresponding each other and reach the state of Heaven-Man Unity. Painting creation makes the mental aspects of oriental paintings, in other words, Sim(心) aesthetics more important because painting creation is the expression of passions(性情) individuals have and painter’s psychology is also projected to the work. Thus, the reason why oriental painting arts make Sim(心) action important is that the Far Eastern Thought based mentally on oriental thought has a base of Sim(心) philosophy
Therefore, the succession and development of Sim(心) aesthetic ideas that An Jung-sik, No Su-hyeon, Park Se-won, Lim Song-Hee showed can be very significant in East Asian art history as well as Korean art education history in the 20th century, and it will be continuously studied more in-depth in the more multi-sided angles in future.
