There has been much debate over whether it is appropriate for Christians to make stock investments. This study attempts to find a clear answer by dividing the issue on two levels: 1) stock market system appropriateness and 2) stock investment behavior, and analyzing the former. More specifically, the study analyzes stock market system appropriateness based on the economic thought of Luther and Calvin, two of the most notable figures in the Protestant Reformation.
Luther permitted interest according to the two kingdoms theory while Calvin permitted it based on the productive role of money. Although the basis for allowing interest is different among the two reformers, they are uniform in the conclusion that interest can be allowed in the lives of Christians. In light of this understanding, by analyzing the benefits and problems of the stock market system comes the conclusion that the benefits are great while the problems lie not in the system itself but in the behavior of the market participants. Therefore, under the presumption that market participants follow the investment principles, allowing Christians to invest in stocks is desirable.
