The study of the Korean history on meteorological change or climate change is generally carried out by focusing on natural calamities included in the official history in each period. Concerning the Goryeo Period, it was focused on the change of the five elements in general. Namely, astronomical phenomena and five elements were composed as major items in the history books, and therefore, the records contained in those books are addressed as serious natural calamities nearly indicating the signs of the chaotic world. For this reason, studies are concentrated on how natural disasters affected the nation and social organizations and how the government and private sector’s responses were, rather than on the meteorological phenomena.
This paper identified the types and characteristics of meteorological data used for the study of Korean history, and discussed the meteorological change and response aspects of the Jeju society in the Pre-modern Period, based on the study results that analyzed various meteorological changes and response ways in the pre-modern society, due to natural disasters.
