This study aims to examine the meaning of humanness in Sigurd F. Olson’s ecological aesthetics. The qualities of aesthetic appreciations of nature among human beings range from a primitive sensitivity to neighboring natural objects to a higher cognitive capacity to analyze the natural phenomena; whereas the same qualities among animals are presumed to converge on the intense primitive sensitivity to their surroundings. The different dimension of aesthetic appreciations between human beings and animals should not be views as the revelation of their dominance relationship in the wild nature. Rather, the commonality of their primitive aesthetic sensitivity serves as evidence for their ecological equality. The disinterested gaze in the wilderness often degrades natural things to the abject ‘other.’ Olson reinterprets disinterestedness in modern aesthetic theory through the lens of acentric environmentalism and aesthetic engagement. The true meaning of humanness starts from indulging oneself to the physical nature. The initial step of aesthetic experience is to mobilize one’s primitive sensitivity to feel the natural beauty; the second, to approximate to the universal order; and the last, to comprehend the right place of my identity in the universe. This change shows from the sharpening of affective ability to the development of cognition for environment. Olson thinks that anthropogenic activity in the uncharted nature is not always anthropocentric. To him, understanding the value of harmony and balance between nature experiences and philosophical meditation is crucial to the perception of human location in the physical nature.
