Objectives:As for the epidemiology of major depression in the Korean elderly, there have not yet been many researches in Korea. The aims of this study are to investigate 1) correlation between demographic factors and depression and 2) correlation between depression and cognitive function in the elderly.
Methods:Data were analyzed from a total of 263 participants aged over 65 by cross-sectional community-based random sampling in a metropolitan area of South Korea. All participants took a Korean version of Composite International Diagnostic Interview(K-CIDI) to identify whether they were depressed or not, and we gathered Demographic information. Mini Mental Status Examination in the Korean version of the CERAD assessment packet(MMSE-KC) and Korean dementia rating scale(K-DRS) were also employed to investigate their DSM-IV major depression.
Results:The estimated prevalence of Major depressive disorder was 9.5% with the K-CIDI interview. Female, illiteracy, living alone, and inoccupation were significantly associated with MDD in later life. The group diagnosed as MDD showed significantly lower scores on K-DRS(initiation/perseveration). But there were no significant differences in MMSEKC scores.
Conclusion:The prevalence rate of depressive disorder of the Korean elderly was similar to other developed countries. People without occupation and living alone are high risk group of elderly depression. Probability of depression is considered in the elderly with complaining somatic symptoms like fatigue and insomnia. Cognitive function like executive function was significantly low according to the K-DRS.
