Analyzed in this article are multiple records contained inside Goryeo-sa concerning the dynasty’s diplomatic ceremonies involving foreign envoys, which are respectively titled as ‘Welcoming Ceremony for the North Dynasty’s Envoy carrying Royal edicts(迎北朝詔使儀)’ and ‘Greeting Ceremony for the North Dynasty’s Envoy visiting with Condolences and Orders to Resume duty(迎北朝起復告勅使儀).’ The objective of this article is to evaluate Okumura(奧村周司)’s previous research, and also achieve a new comprehensive understanding of the records, as in this researcher’s opinion they are yet to be sufficiently analyzed.
Okumura’s research was apparently made from the point of view of Goryeo, as he argued that the reason for the Goryeo king to stand in the east facing west in such ceremonies was to avoid displaying a posture as a ‘vassal’ serving the Khitan(契丹) Liao dynasty. However, comparison with similar ceremonies and protocols, described in Chinese historical texts such as Songshi(宋史) and Liaoshi(遼史), suggests that the Goryeo king stood in the east facing west as Goryeo following Khitan’s rules rather than Chinese traditions, according to which the Goryeo king usually stood in south to face north.
