Kim, Sa-ryang asked several questions through Cheon-ma(The Horse of Heaven) to a Japanese writer, Tanaka, Hidemitsu when New Order Movement was spreading following the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war. The question was about the area called Joseon, Joseon language, and Joseon culture. Tanaka did not answer it until 8 years after through Chwihanbae(Yoidore-bune/The Drunken Ship). Japan’s defeat in the war could be one reason of course but the answer that Tanaka gave through Chwihan bae(Yoidore-bune/The Drunken Ship) was full of empty words. In other words, it was just an answer without answer. It said that Tanaka himself was another victim of imperialism. Besides, Tanaka kept expressing that he comprehended well about Joseon, Joseon people, and joseon culture in his work. Every logic in his work was depending on imperialistic orientalism from adoption of spy fiction form, to ignorance, prejudice and misunderstanding about Joseon, Joseon people and Joseon language; furthermore, he expressed his memory that was transformed and fabricated after defeat in the war in his work. He cleverly whitewashed and eliminated the fact that he actively tried to transfer Joseon literature during the colonial period into empire literature. Tanaka’s attitude was closely related to the way how empire regarded colony. The historical fact of Japanese defeat in the war led the postwar Japan to the unexpected direction. Asia, including Joseon, was forgotten, or deleted while the Greater East Asia War was renamed the Pacific War; the logic that Japan and Japanese people except some warlords were another victim was reinforced by this. As a result of looking for the cause of war from inside of Japan, a nationalistic structure that ?inland=Japan?, ?people=Japanese? was set in. Tanaka’s Chwihan bae(Yoidore-bune/The Drunken Ship) accords to this structure, so-called ‘Oblivion Empire’.
