The purpose of this study is to compare Shin Jae-Hyo’s “Namchang Chunhyangka” and Gogol’s drama Inspector General. Shin Jae-Hyo and Gogol are comtemporary writers, who lived in the age of civil riot in Joseon and Russia of the 19th century, resisted main ruling ideology and tried to resolve oppressed emotions of the people with satirical laugh in their works.
“Namchang Chunhyangka” and Inspector General use material ‘Inspector’ as ‘secret royal inspector’ and ‘inspector general’, have characteristic of the people’s humorous nature and carnivalesque subversion.
The society, that secret royal inspector and inspector general arrived at, is inverted world, order of the life are overturned like carnivalesque world. The characters of these works debase the authority through both-faced inclination and clownery, and make the life to the play. These works have carnival structure as crowning and uncrowning of the characters. There are various material and physical images in Shin Jae-Hyo’s “Namchang Chunhyangka” and Gogol’s Inspector General. In “Namchang Chunhyangka” material?physical images were used for meaning, that overturn oppressed confucian ethics and the existing value and bring the birth of new order, but in Gogol’s Inspector General was not found revival life and material?physical images were shown for meaning as loss of human values.
