This paper describes the social practices performed in different languages by members of a community in Rivera (Uruguay), next to the Brazilian border. It also reflects on how the perspective of the speakers about their linguistic practices can show aspects of their own identity. First, I discuss the available literature on social and historical aspects of the region and present the environment where the research was conducted. Next, I present and analyze the assessments made by the speakers about the variations of the languages they speak and how these assessments have an effect on their identity. Data collection comprised generating ethnographic data through participant observation, recorded audio interviews, photographs and field documents. The analysis shows that the participants belong to a social group that are exposed to cultural elements in Portuguese and in Spanish and that they carry out different literacy activities in both languages on their everyday life routine. It also reveals that the identity of the speakers are filtered by the assessments they make about the languages they speak ? which, in their view ? do not match with what they conceive as the national language of Uruguay, or the language of the neighboring country, Brazil.
